Smoke Management Systems by Perfect HVAC Solutions
Smoke management is critical for life safety during building fires - smoke kills more people than flames in most fire incidents. Perfect HVAC Solutions designs and installs comprehensive smoke management systems for high-rise buildings, atriums, basement parking, and large commercial complexes per NBC 2016 and NFPA 92.
Smoke Management Strategies
- Stairway Pressurization - Maintains positive pressure in fire-rated escape stairs to prevent smoke ingress
- Lift Lobby Pressurization - Same principle for lift lobbies in high-rise buildings
- Smoke Extraction - Mechanical exhaust to remove smoke from affected zones
- Atrium Smoke Control - Zoned smoke management for tall atriums and large open spaces
- Basement Smoke Purge - Integrated with basement parking ventilation for rapid smoke clearance
- Smoke Vents - Automatic roof vents for natural smoke exhaust
Engineering Standards
Our smoke management designs follow NBC 2016 (especially Part 4 Fire and Life Safety), NFPA 92 (Standard for Smoke Control Systems), NFPA 101 (Life Safety Code), and applicable state fire department guidelines. CFD modeling is conducted for complex atriums and large spaces to verify design effectiveness.
Pressurization System Components
Pressurization systems include high-static centrifugal fans (typically with VFD for response time control), fire/smoke dampers with intumescent seals, sheet metal ductwork in fire-rated shafts, automatic and manual relief dampers, control panels with fire alarm integration, and pressure differential measurement instruments. Design pressure is typically 12-50 Pa above ambient.
Smoke Extraction Components
Smoke extraction systems use F300 (300 degrees C for 60 minutes) or F400 (400 degrees C for 90 minutes) rated fans, high-temperature ductwork (or fire-rated enclosures), motorized smoke control dampers at zone boundaries, and smoke detectors integrated with fire alarm panel. Activation logic is preset based on fire scenarios.
Brand Partnerships
We supply smoke management equipment from Greenheck (US), Twin City Fan, Halton, Soler & Palau, Systemair, Bombay Fan Industries, and Indian manufacturers. Smoke-rated fans, smoke dampers, and control systems all carry appropriate UL/EN/BIS certifications. Brand selection considers fan performance, smoke rating, noise levels, and BMS integration.
Testing and Compliance
Smoke management systems require functional testing per NFPA 92 standards - pressure differential measurement during activation, smoke pencil testing for door closure verification, fan performance under fire conditions, control system response timing, and cause-and-effect verification with fire alarm integration. Complete documentation supports fire department witness testing and approval.
